Level 1 vs Level 2, Briefly

Hardwired or Plug-In
Both are legitimate and we do both.
A hardwired EV charger is connected directly to the circuit. Cleaner look, no plug to fail, required for units above 40 amps, and generally the better choice for a permanent install.
A plug-in unit uses a NEMA 14-50 receptacle. Easier to swap if you change chargers or cars, and easier to take with you if you move. If you go this route, the receptacle needs to be industrial grade. The cheap ones are a known failure point under continuous load and they overheat.

What the Install Involves
Every home EV charging station install runs through the same basic sequence.
- Load calculation on your existing service to confirm you have capacity
- Panel check for an available double-pole slot at the right amperage
- Route planning from the panel to the charger location
- Dedicated circuit run with correct wire gauge for the distance
- GFCI protection as required by the equipment and code
- Mounting the unit at a usable height with the cable reaching your car’s port
- Permit, inspection, testing, and labeling
The location conversation matters more than people expect. Which side is the charge port on? Do you back in or pull in? Are you charging two cars eventually? Is the wall you want already covered in shelving? Five minutes on that saves a lot of frustration later.
